Military Toy Tanks, Trucks and Play Sets
Toy tanks, trucks, and cars have changed drastically over the years, especially since the 1940s. The earliest ones were not able to have their doors opened or to do much but roll along. When fathers and uncles went to war in the 1940s, tanks and trucks became more popular toys for boys, and they were very much improved. Most boys suddenly changed from playing with farm tractors and construction equipment and wanted to play with toy tanks, trucks, and army toys once the war began.

GI Joe
In 1964, GI Joe entered the army and toy tank scene. GI Joe toy vehicles became an overnight success with boys who loved the army play theme. The action figure dolls, around the same size as a Barbie doll, had 21 moving parts so that boys could act out any imaginable army scene. The Hasbro Company who manufactured GI Joe also came out with another toy within five years – Canadian Mounties who were complete with anti-aircraft tanks and other toy tanks.

This action figure was saved by the animated series in his name and a new trend of army play complete with GI Joe and toy tanks continued. Characters had to choose whether to fight for good or evil. Video games were also created with GI Joe, and kids and adults could continue army play in video form. Even today, army videos remain popular along with GI Joe and other action figures for little boys.
Boys continue to want to be just like their fathers, the same as the boys of the 1940s who acted out what their fathers and uncles were doing in WWII.
